Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
January at the Grand Canyon is cold and often quiet. Highs reach 10°C (50°F) and overnight temperatures fall to 1°C (33°F), so ice on the rim trails is a real consideration, in shadow. Crowds are at their annual low, which means you can take your time at every viewpoint.
February nudges marginally warmer, with highs around 13°C (55°F) and lows of 2°C (36°F), and sees a modest uptick of early-season visitors looking to beat the spring rush. A light dusting of snow remains possible on the rim.
March is where the Grand Canyon starts to shake off winter. Highs climb to 18°C (64°F), though mornings at 5°C (42°F) still demand real layers. Spring break brings families, so weekends in the second half of the month see noticeably more traffic than January.
April is one of the finest months to visit. Highs of 24°C (75°F) are good for rim walks and moderate inner-canyon hikes, lows of 10°C (49°F) keep mornings refreshing, and the park is busy but not overwhelmed. Book accommodation well in advance.
May turns warm quickly, with afternoon highs reaching 29°C (84°F) and comfortable overnight temperatures around 14°C (58°F). Inner-canyon hikers should still start early but conditions remain reasonable for much of the morning. This is peak spring, and the canyon draws serious visitor numbers.
June marks the transition to summer heat. Highs of 36°C (96°F) make midday rim walks tiring and inner-canyon hiking in the afternoon hazardous. Lows of 21°C (70°F) mean nights stay warm. This is also the driest stretch of the year.
July is the hottest month, with highs touching 38°C (100°F) on the rim. Night temperatures of 24°C (75°F) provide little recovery. The inner canyon is dramatically hotter. Afternoon thunderstorms, when they arrive, can be spectacular from the rim viewpoints but require caution on exposed trails below.
August still burns. Highs hit 36°C (96°F) and nights hover at 23°C (73°F). The Southwest monsoon peaks now. Sudden violent storms crash through late afternoons. Pack rain gear. Expect flash lightning.
September sighs relief. Highs ease to 32°C (90°F) and evenings drop to 19°C (66°F). Change is slow. Early September still feels like August. Late month brings fresher air. The canyon exhales.
October is April in reverse. Arguably the best month. Highs sit at 25°C (77°F). Lows dip to 12°C (54°F). Mornings snap crisp. Crowds vanish. School schedules reclaim families. Perfect timing.
November turns sharp. Highs only reach 18°C (64°F). Lows slide to 6°C (43°F). Layer up. Visitor numbers plummet. A clear rim day rewards you. Low winter light ignites Redwall limestone. Bring fleece.
December is hushed. Highs of 12°C (53°F) and lows of 2°C (36°F) keep you brisk. Ice glazes north-facing trails. Christmas week swells briefly. Most days echo January silence. Peace returns.
